My Project

During our school year, students will learn about living things, including plants and animals. The science modules we receive from the district come with guppies, tetras, and snails. If we had a fish tank, it would provide the students with a hands-on learning experience and teach them how to care for living things throughout the entire school year!

Even the smallest of pets enhances our well-being!

This project will provide each student in our class with the opportunity to learn how to care for living things. Some students never get the opportunity to care for a pet or animal at home. Hopefully having class pets will help all students have a sense of pride and ownership.

Students will have the opportunity to investigate each of the animals living in the fish tank. They will be able to observe them up close and have discussions about what living things need and the best way to take care of them. This project can make a huge impact on their understanding of living things.

Guppies, Snails, and Learning, Oh My!, a project from Mrs. Barnes (2024)

    FAQs

What fish will school with guppies? ›

A guppy-only tank is truly an astonishing sight to behold because of their flashy fins and energetic behavior, but you can easily keep them with other peaceful tank mates like cory catfish and neon tetras.

How many guppies and snails can you have in a 10 gallon tank? ›

Add a filter and an air stone, and these fish will live quite happily in a 10 gallon tank. In fact, you could go up to 7–8 guppies quite easily. Be sure to feed your snails, since you won't have any algae at first.

Are too many snails bad for a fish tank? ›

There really are no "bad" snails, but a few species can multiply unchecked and overrun an aquarium. Seeing hundreds, if not thousands of these little beasts taking over your tank can be unnerving, and they can place a burden on biological filtration as well as clog filter intake tubes.

How many guppies should be kept together? ›

Guppies are best kept with other guppies because they are highly social. Guppies should never be housed alone and should instead be kept in groups of at least three fish from the same species. If choosing to house male and female guppies in the same tank, provide two to three females for every male.

What is the lifespan of a guppy? ›

    Guppy Lifespan and Life Cycle

Guppies don't live very long in the wild, an average of two years. Many things can influence this, though, including their location and what predators are nearby. Male guppies reach sexual maturity at two months old, while female guppies reach sexual maturity at three months old.

What fish live peacefully with guppies? ›

Many community-type fish do well with guppies. Most smaller tetra species (neons, lemons, candy canes, skirted, etc) would be fine. Just remember, tetras are schooling fish and need groups of 6 or more to thrive, so be sure you have a large enough tank.

What fish can live with snails? ›

Some of the best tank mates for Mystery Snails include Guppies and Endlers, Rasboras, Tetras, Ricefish, Amano Shrimp, Vampire Shrimp, Dwarf Cherry Shrimp (Neocaridina davidi), and other snail species. Some of the worst are Oscars, Cichlids, Puffers, Bichirs, Kinfefish, Goldfish, Loaches, and Crayfish.

Will my fish eat the snails? ›

Many loaches – such as clown, zebra, yoyo, and dwarf chain loaches – can use their pointy snouts to poke into snail shells and slurp out the insides. Certain larger cichlids like oscars also enjoy a good meal of mollusks, so don't forget to save some for them.

Do guppies eat snail eggs in a tank? ›

Snails reproduce at a high rate by laying many eggs in aquariums all year around. Guppies of all ages eat snail eggs. Big guppy mamas love to snack on snail eggs. And even young guppy fry pick on snail eggs.

What fish Cannot live with guppies? ›

The typical rule to finding compatible tank mates with Guppies to create a community aquarium tank is to avoid known fin-nibblers, such as Tiger Barbs or Red-Tailed Shark, and fish that grow too big in comparison to Guppies, such as Angelfish.
