Brothers deny being objects in wild chase United Press International UNION CITY, Tenn. Two Illinois fugitives suspected of stealing cars, shooting at police, and leading authorities on a wild chase across west Tennessee in a 24-hourperiod apparently were not in the state at the time, Illinois. authorities said. The new information, if true, leaves Tennessee authorities wondering who they were chasing all that time. A huge manhunt began when burglar Scott Haynes, 33, and his brother, murderer Robert Haynes, 20, were reportedly spotted i in their native Obion County, on Friday, April 22, the day after they escaped from a Christian County, prison.

The brothers were suspected of exchanging gunfire with Martin police that Friday morning and stealing several cars in Kentucky and Tennessee on Thursday and Friday. They were captured in Henderson, five days later and are back in Illinois. Christian County Sheriff Leon Mahan said Tuesday the fugitives apparently remained in Illinois at least through Saturday night, April 24. "My own personal opinion is, it is impossible for them to be in some of those areas where they were reportedly seen," Mahan said, citing witnesses, evidence, and statements by the prisoners. Mahan said his department has evidence the brothers stole a vehicle from the Christian County area about 48 hours after they escaped from the jail.

They hid in a nearby wooded area on Friday and most of Saturday, he said. The brothers were accused of stealing cars in Clinton, and stealing cars in Clinton, and Fulgham, shooting at Martin police, and stealing cars in Union City and Rutherford, Tenn. One law enforcement agent likened the attempt to catch them that Friday as a "Dukes of chase, referring to the comical television series. Obion County Sheriff Nathan Cunningham said Tuesday he could not prove it was the Haynes brothers. "I don't know who they were chasing around here," Cunningham said.

Martin Police Chief Jackie Moore said he still believes it was the Haynes brothers involved in the shootout. "We're saying our investigation is accurate," Moore said. District Attorney General David Hayes of Union City said he has decided to wait for more information before pressing charges against the Illinois prisoners. But he said Tennessee investigators had no reason to change their assumption of what happened Friday. "A lot of this new information is based on statements by the Haynes brothers and we have no reason to believe them at this time," said Hayes.

Newbern Police Chief William Hinson said the fugitives abandoned a car stolen in Mayfield, and stole another in Newbern Sunday night or Monday morning. Have You Seen Our Gift Dept. Lately?
