The Plain Dealer from Cleveland, Ohio (2024)

1 THE PLAIN DEALER, OPINION A rookie understands By Dwayne Cheeks written for every rookie in Cleveland, especialRussell and Foots Walker. rookie. is never easy, no matter what one's occupation is. Believe me when I say I know from experience. I'm the rookie of The Plain Dealer Sports Department.

Oh, those growing pains! How they do hurt. I haven't had so many doubts since I misplaced my rattle and blanket. I've learned more about the English language in the past three months as a cub reporter than I ever thought existed. Campy and Foots, I presume, are learning about basketball from Bill Fitch in the same way. When one is young and tender, which rookies usually are, he must learn to listen to his elders.

Not everyone over 30 has a grapefruit for a mind. There is great wisdom locked in the heads of those older than ourselves. So a word to the wise should be sufficient. Listen! It can only help. A lack of fundamentals usually is the key to errors rookies make.

Young people have the preconceived notion that all things come easy. They don't. "You have to pay your dues in this business," I was informed by a white-haired gentleman--my boss. Never would I have imagined that learning to master the King's English would be so difficult. It can turn one to mental oatmeal.

But with hard work, the patience of those around me, and a nightly prayer, I hope to get there. I can identify with Walker and Russell when I go to the Coliseum. They are paying their dues, just as Mack Mitchell and Oscar Roan will do with the Browns next summer. Great athletes such as Walt Frazier, 0.J. Simpson, Sandy Koufax, and writers such as Charles Dickens, H.G.

Wells, James Baldwin and Ernest Hemingway weren't overnight successes." They had to apply themselves and learn all the skills and tricks that went with their professions. And for all you coaches and bosses out there- -we 'rookies will some day be your salvation. For as we go, so go you. Now where did I leave my blanket? I'm about to write a story. E.

By D'Arcy Egan The squire of Delaware will step into the spotlight April 11 as Northfield Park gets ready for one of the biggest opening nights ever at the standardbred plant. T. Wayne (Curly) Smart, the Harness Hall of Famer from Delaware, will be, honored as Northfield sends out the $20.000 Curly Smart Free For All Pace. The largest opening night purse ever offered, the $20,000 Curly Smart Pace should attract some of the top pacers in the country. "I'm really tickled to have a race named after me," said Curly, a spry 70-year-old who still keeps his hand in harness racing.

"I've nine horses getting ready in Florida," he said. "I leave the driving to my grandson, Rick Midden. He's 23 now, and he drives a pretty good race." Smart drove a pretty good race in his day, beating many of harness racing's best at many of the top tracks in the country. En route to winning 1,957 races and $2,689,333, Curly beat them all the Big Apple, taking the driving crown at Roosevelt (N.Y.) Raceway in 1949, and both Roosevelt and New York's Yonkers Raceway in 1950. In 1952 he picked off driving crowns at Rosecroft Raceway and Columbus' Scioto Downs, and was the top reinsman at old Grandview Raceway here in 1961.

Ohio's District No. 1 director of the United States Trotting Association, Smart keeps the Delaware (O.) Fairgrounds oval in shape for the yearly Little Brown Jug classic. Smart's Delaware oval is rated as the fastest half-miler in the country, and he's a master at making sure the Jug Day speedsters have a perfect surface. Curly won the first Little Brown Jug in 1946 with Ensign Hanover, and notched his second Jug win in 1952 with Meadow Rice. "It'll be nice to get back to Northfield," said Smart, "and I think we'll even be racing our stable there this spring.

"I've always had a warm spot in my heart for Northfield. When my good friend Walter built the place, I came up with my horses to help him open it said Curly. "That first year was a bad one, with lots of deep mud." Now Smart does most of his racing at Scioto Downs. "It's not such a long trip home, and I like to be home every said Curly. Northfield general manager John Phil- Associated Press lips has announced that Joe DeFrank, currently at Windsor (Ont.) Raceway, will be racing secretary for the 1975 season, which finishes its 150 nights on Oct.

11. Also on Phillips' list of special features will be the Walter J. Michael Pace, a Curly Smart, a 70-year-old Harness Hall of Famer, surveys the Little Brown Jug scene from a fence at the Delaware (O.) Fairgrounds. $20,000 three-year old pace, and the Charles A. Otis Memorial Pace, a free-for-all pace that featured a $25,000 purse in 1974 and a track record of 1:57.3 by Armbro Nesbit.

Northfield will host two legs of the Canadian Pacing Series in 1975, a pair of Grandview Futurities and six events of the Ohio Sires Stakes. The early closing events this season, which require nominations to be made by March 15, are the Battle of Lake Erie and Johnny Appleseed Series. The Lake Erie is for three-year-old pacers and will conclude May 29 with an estimated $20,000 jackpot, and the Johnny Appleseed, for two-year-old pacers, will climax July 17 with an estimated pot of $25,000.
